What is Rushing in a Sorority?
Sorority rush, also known as sorority recruitment, or simply rush, is a process where college women who are interested in joining a sorority attend a series of events to meet and get to know members of different sororities on their campus. The goal of sorority rush is for both the sorority members and potential new members (often abbreviated to PNMs) to find a good match based on shared values, interests, and personalities.
During sorority rush, potential new members typically attend events hosted by different sororities on campus, such as meet-and-greets, philanthropy events, and preference (pref) parties. Each round of events allows both parties to learn more about each other and for the sororities to narrow down their choices for new members.
At the end of the process, potential new members receive "bids," which are formal invitations to join a sorority. They can choose to accept or decline these bids, and if they accept, they become full members of the sorority.
Sorority rush is an exciting time for college girls, but it can also be a great way to make new friends, get involved in campus activities, and develop leadership skills. Rushing a sorority can also be stressful with so much happening at once. Stay organized, be yourself, and focus on where you feel most comfortable.
Tips for Rush in 2025:
Show off your personal style: Sorority recruitment can be a great opportunity to showcase your unique fashion sense. Be sure to dress to impress while also staying true to your personal style. Remember that you want to stand out from the crowd in a way that feels authentic to you.
-
Share your passions and interests: Sororities are looking for new members who are passionate, engaged, and involved in their communities. Don't be afraid to talk about your hobbies, interests, and extracurricular activities. This will help you connect with sorority sisters who share your values and passions.
-
Be confident and authentic: The most important thing during sorority recruitment is to be true to yourself. Finding the right rush dress will help you shine. Don't try to be someone you're not. Sorority sisters are looking for new members who are confident, authentic, and genuine.
-
Ask thoughtful questions: Sorority recruitment is a two-way street. While the sorority sisters are getting to know you, you should also be getting to know them. Ask thoughtful questions about their values, philanthropy, sisterhood, and anything else that interests you.
-
Use social media to your advantage: Social media can be a powerful tool during sorority recruitment. Follow the sororities you're interested in on Instagram and engage with their posts. Share your own content that shows off your personality, interests, and style. Just be sure to keep things appropriate and professional.
-
Stay positive and open-minded: Sorority recruitment can be stressful, but try to stay positive and open-minded throughout the process. Remember that there are many great sororities out there, and you'll find the one that's the best fit for you.
-
Practice your conversations: You’ll be talking a lot during rush, so it helps to practice answering common questions and introducing yourself with confidence. A little prep can go a long way in easing nerves.
-
Take care of yourself: Get enough sleep, eat well, and stay hydrated throughout recruitment. You'll feel more energized and make a better impression when you're physically and mentally refreshed.
By following these tips, you'll be well on your way to becoming everyone's rush crush during sorority recruitment. Good luck babes!
