Choosing the Right Sorority Tips 01: Know Your Values

What values are meaningful to you? Each chapter has a chosen philanthropy that a portion of your dues will go to and host sorority events for, so it’s important that you believe in the cause! Next, envision a community where you thrive in what does that look like? You want to spend your college years surrounded by people who will build you up and help you grow. As you go through sorority rush, you’ll be meeting a ton of new people throughout the different chapters. They’ll be asking you questions, and it’s encouraged that you ask questions back! Find out what they’re passionate about, why they chose their sorority, and get a sense as to where their values lay in order to determine if you are a match. To help increase your confidence going into recruitment, find rush dresses that will help you make a great first impression.

Choosing the Right Sorority Tips 02: Do Your Research (Hint: Social Media)

Every sorority is uniquely different, each with its own traditions, events, and culture. Social media is your inside look into what being a sister looks like for each chapter. You were born into a time where you can easily access what feels like unlimited knowledge and first hand accounts. Use apps like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Reddit to watch and read about different sororities at different schools. Finding girls with the same passions or hobbies or even with the same fashion style as you can help factor into your decision. This will also help you get a sense of the top sorority rush dress trends, and see the best sorority rush skirts, so you can start building your perfect recruitment week wardrobe. Don’t be scared to stalk, you never know what or who you’ll find!

Choosing the Right Sorority Tips 03: Reach Out - Your Rho Gam is Your Best Friend

Ask questions, reach out, and use your voice! If you’re unfamiliar with the term rho gam, it’s a sorority member who disaffiliates from their chapter during rush week to act as an unbiased mentor for you. Basically, your rho gam is there to hold your hand and guide you, so treat them like your rush bff! Remember, every single girl who is an active sorority member was once a PNM (potential new member) just like you. They all felt the same nerves that you do, and probably had very similar questions to you. Asking them for any advice could help you connect and strengthen bonds. And, if you aren’t made to feel comfortable enough to ask questions, maybe that sorority isn’t right for you. Choosing a Sorority FAQ

What are the differences between sororities?

Sororities differ from one another in several ways, depending on the campus and chapter. Each sorority is involved in philanthropy, so finding out what kind of philanthropic work and which charities they connect with will help distinguish them on that level. Each sorority also pairs with a fraternity on campus, so they have different events. Sororities also have individual characteristics that allow them to be unique in their own ways. By researching and asking questions, you can get a sense for these differences before and during rush.

When do I have to pick my top sorority?

The first round of sorority rush is Open House. During this, you will see each house and meet a few girls from each chapter on campus. You will begin dwindling down your list of top houses as the week progresses, and will have to choose your top sorority by Preference Night.

How do I get a sorority bid?

In order to get a bid for a sorority, you and the chapter must match. Throughout rush, you will connect with and get close to a couple sororities, then will submit your top houses in order at the end of rush week. Each chapter will select their top PNMs (potential new members), and if there is a match, you will be offered a bid.

What do I wear to sorority rush?

Sorority rush style is primarily made up of mini dresses, skirts, and a more formal dress specifically chosen for Preference Night. While rush style differs between states and universities, rush dresses are typically light and bright colored mini dresses that are both appropriate and feminine. You can discover your campus’s rush style by utilizing social media and the boutiques local to that college town.
